I could use a couple of good contractors to help with the slew of projects people are sending my way these days. Most of the contractors I know are really busy right now - it’s a great time to be a web developer. I took it as an opportunity to find some folks who are already working purely on open source platforms. So, I posted an ad on Craig’s list. The ad was very simple, with the title of, “Seeking web developers who work in pure OSS environments.” I posted both in Dallas and in Denver. I’ve just started going through the responses and decided that I have to share:
…After reading your job description, I am confident that my skills and my passion for technology are a perfect match for this position.
I would bring to your company a broad range of skills, including:
- Knowledge of Photoshop
- Designing a website in Dreamweaver
…
Photoshop? Dreamweaver? Dude… Wait, what?
…Following are the Skills that I work on:
· ASP
· Java Script
· PHP
· Dream Weaver
· Adobe Photoshop
…
ASP? Dream Weaver? Photoshop? Hey, at least you got PHP in there! I clipped it, but he went on to list Flash as well.
…and am the ‘Perfect’ match as to what you are looking for… …I am very comfortable working with ASP, VB Scripting, ASP.NET, VB.NET, Cold Fusion, Java Scripting, MS SQL server…
Yeah, looks like another perfect match to me… Um, no…
HI
I’ve attached my resume in Word
Haa haa haa… um, no…
* .NET (ASP.NET, VB.NET, ADO.NET, Web Services and C#)
* Strong in Visual Basic 6/5, ASP, PHP, and XML
* Sound Experience in Database design of MS SQL server 2000/7,
MS Access and MySQL
Not winning me over here… What’s noteworthy about this fellow is that he replied to both the Denver and the Dallas post. He must really need work.
… … …PS: YES WE DO WORK IN OSS ENVIRONMENT.
That one was from one of the many outsourcing firms. Their website is pure flash.
The rest were mostly outsourcing firms from all around the world including the USA, India, Boston, Argentina, and Malaysia. Most of them didn’t really give a location and I didn’t look up their websites to see. All in all, I’ve gotten 21 responses in about 24 hours. Of those, ONE person seems to have read the post and his response included:
I’m interested, but I don’t know what I’d do without Photoshop
Kudos to this man for at least reading the post. So the grand total of Web developers who responded and are working in a pure OSS environemnt: Zero. Come on, I know you guys are out there!
Anyway, I got a good lol at my slew of responses and had to share them openly. I hope someone else enjoys them as well.
I should learn web stuff more..
The OSS thing is hard todo.. although if I didn’t work at GBX it would be helluva easier.
Well, as a follow up, I’ve started to get a few contacts who actually do their development purely on OSS platforms. I’m excited! =D
